Pool Party Safety

The summer season is ideal for pool parties. It is an enjoyable way to cool off during the warmer months. Though a lot of fun for people of all ages, being around the pool comes with some risks for adults and kids without proper safety precautions. When planning for a poolside barbecue or get-together, swimming pool owners should ensure a safe environment for guests.

Safety in and around the pool is essential, as drowning is among the leading causes of unintentional injury deaths. Therefore, staying alert and remaining safe during a pool party is crucial.

Here are a few tips to avoid untoward incidents and ensure pool parties are safe and fun for all:

Inspect the pool before the party

The first step towards pool party safety is to perform a pre-party inspection. Ensure the pool meets all code requirements, check the water and chemical levels, evaluate the equipment for proper functioning, and repair any damage. Install drain covers if needed, and assess that the fence and gate are secure and all components are working correctly. Finally, remove any sharp, pointy, or slippery objects from the deck.

Set pool safety rules

It is best to set some safety rules for the pool party, especially for younger children and non-swimmers. List them all and paste them at a place visible to everyone visiting.

Some basic rules include:

  • No diving or jumping into a shallow pool

  • No running around the pool

  • Stay away from drains

  • No one swims alone

  • Take rest breaks at regular intervals

  • No horseplay

  • No glass containers or alcohol around the pool

  • No drinking and swimming

Gather adequate supplies

The host should ensure proper safety equipment and gear is available in an emergency. Some items to have on hand include a phone, first aid kit, and throwable life preserver. In addition, arrange for a good supply of floatation devices and swim diapers for kids, and stock up on water and sunscreen.

Never leave children unattended in or around the pool

One critical part of ensuring kids’ safety during a pool party is to always have an adult on deck to supervise. It’s also helpful to know the children’s swimming abilities. Assign multiple supervisors to take turns and watch the kids. If possible, hire a lifeguard.

Pick age-appropriate toys and games

Pool parties aren’t complete without toys and games. Consider the age and swimming abilities of the kids while purchasing, and avoid games and activities that may be risky. Swimming races and Marco Polo are the two safe games for kids. Search the internet for some more fun ideas.

Prepare for an emergency

It’s advisable that pool owners learn CPR and First Aid. Classes are offered in multiple locations for a small fee. No one likes to consider the dangers, but drowning accidents can happen anytime, and it is best to be prepared for an emergency. Learning CPR keeps the mind at ease and increases the chances of people surviving an incident.

Cover all the bases before a pool party to enjoy it. Call a pool service professional to ensure the pool is safe and clean.
